The "Zero-Waste" Mainstream

“Sustainability is the key”. One of the common trends people practice nowadays is the so called “Zero Waste Lifestyle”. Actually, it is not just a trend, but it is supposed to be a collective responsibility. However, because of interesting promotion and advertisement of different products and materials associated with zero waste, people somewhat overlook the main purpose of its advocacy and being.

In the last 20 years, from a simple term which expresses the aspirations of recycling activists, No Waste morphed to Zero Waste. According to the Zero Waste International Alliance (ZWIA), zero waste is the conservation of all resources by means of responsible production, consumption, reuse, and recovery of all products, packaging, and materials, without burning them, and without discharges to land, water, or air that threaten the environment or human health. Simply, it is more than the 3R practice we are used to, highly supported by being sustainable.

Through the years people in the Philippines are becoming more aware of the manifestations of waste which significantly affects the environment and of course human lives. Fortunately, some people came up with ideas that can support the zero waste lifestyle and slowly eliminate materials that contribute to environmental wastes. Hopefully, more people would be aware of how sustainability could uplift our lives as we help Mother Earth.

Adapting to a zero-waste lifestyle is not all about being fancy, or something to take an advantage with in order to do some business – it is a commitment and a responsibility to buy our world a bit more time, to breathe and to heal from all the resources wasted and taken for granted. Thus, a sustainable lifestyle is worth living.
